It was an ancient trading centre and some historians consider that it was founded in the 16th century BCE. According to a legend, the city was founded by Noah. The Greeks and Romans called it Nacksuana / Naxuana (from the Greek for sweet water), Armenians - Nakhijevan, meaning "pre-shelter" (for Noah). As early as the 2nd century BCE it is mentioned by Ptolemy as a thriving city. It is spread over the foothills of Zangezur chain, on the right bank of the Nakhchivan river at an altitude of almost 1000 m. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Azerbaijan - a nation with a Turkic and majority-Muslim population - regained its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Despite a 1994 cease-fire, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave (largely Armenian populated). Azerbaijan has lost 16% of its territory and must support some 800,000 refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of the conflict. Corruption is ubiquitous and the promise of widespread wealth from Azerbaijan's undeveloped petroleum resources remains largely unfulfilled..
