Stepanakert in Azerbaijan AZERBAIDJAN azerbaijan. stepanakert Informations and links Stepanakert  Map Stepanakert Photos Stepanakert ------------------------------- Stepanakert (Armenian: ???????????; officially known as Xank?ndi in Azerbaijan, transliterated as Xankendi or Khankendi) is the capital city of the self-declared Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, with a population of about 40,000 people. Control of the area has been the subject of dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia, including war, ever since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. As of 2006, Stepanakert, like the rest of Nagorno-Karabakh, remains under Armenian military control, and much of the former local Azeri population has been displaced eastwards. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Azerbaijan - a nation with a Turkic and majority-Muslim population - regained its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Despite a 1994 cease-fire, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave (largely Armenian populated). Azerbaijan has lost 16% of its territory and must support some 800,000 refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of the conflict. Corruption is ubiquitous and the promise of widespread wealth from Azerbaijan's undeveloped petroleum resources remains largely unfulfilled..
