[in Mandarin (info), in Cantonese (info)] ; Portuguese: Regi?o Administrativa Especial de Macau da República Popular da China [in Portuguese (info)], abbreviated as RAEM), commonly known as Macau or Macao (Traditional Chinese: ??, or informally known as ??) is a small territory on the southern coast of China. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power (in Portuguese "poder administrativo") over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, and it is now one of two special administrative regions of the PRC, together with Hong Kong. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.) Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999. China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Macau, and that Macau will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years..
